NEIGHBORHOOD MEETINGS FOR EMBRACE MILLCREEK PLAN
The Millcreek Township Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors are excited to announce a series of “kick-off” meetings for Embrace Millcreek, the Township’s new comprehensive plan.
Millcreek residents are invited to come learn about the planning process, express their aspirations and concerns for their neighborhoods, and help shape the vision for our Township’s future.
The Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors would like to hear from as many residents as possible. For residents’ convenience the Township will hold four two-hour “Neighborhood Meetings” on four separate evenings throughout Millcreek. Residents are encouraged to attend the meeting closest to them in order to have neighborhood discussions, but are welcome to attend any and all of the other meetings as well.
Meeting Dates, Times, and Locations:
Wednesday, July 12th, 6-8pm: Belle Valley Elementary School
Thursday, July 13th, 6-8pm: JS Wilson Middle School
Wednesday, July 19th, 6-8pm: Grandview Elementary School
Thursday, July 20th, 6-8pm: Westlake Middle School
About the Plan
What do you picture Millcreek to be like in 20 years? Is it a place you’d want to live? A place you think your children and grand children will still call home? If so, why? What will Millcreek have that will make it worth calling home; that will make it a community that the next generations choose to invest in? And if not, how do we change that? What challenges do we have to face? What problems do we have to solve to make sure Millcreek is the community of choice for our children and grand children, for entrepreneurs and innovators, and for new industries and businesses?
These are all questions that we, as a community, need to answer to ensure a successful future for our Township. Finding those answers is the goal of Embrace Millcreek, a community engagement and planning initiative for Millcreek Township.
What is Embrace Millcreek?
Technically, Embrace Millcreek, will be the township’s new “Municipal Comprehensive Plan” (or Comp Plan, for short). Comp Plans are documents authorized by the State’s “Municipalities Planning Code” that are designed to guide the development of a municipality. Traditionally, theses documents are top down encyclopedias of data, facts, and figures created by consultants that do a great job of collecting dust on shelves but don’t have a very good track record of building great places to live.
However, our Millcreek Township Planning Commission is challenging the Board of Supervisors and staff here in the Municipal Building to try something a little different this time around: ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY. Instead of just being a plan on a shelf, Embrace Millcreek is going to be an ongoing public outreach and engagement initiative committed to improving communication with residents, promoting Millcreek’s assets, and bringing folks together to create a community vision for what we want Millcreek to be and how we can make it happen.
The goal is for all of us to Embrace the great things Millcreek has to offer and build on them, and to Embrace the change necessary to take on the challenges we face to help our township reach its full potential.
Who is responsible for Embrace Millcreek?
Our Millcreek Township Planning Commission will be the guiding committee for Embrace Millcreek. The Planning Commission is made up of seven citizens (plus one alternate) who are appointed to four year terms by the Township Supervisors. Commissioners are unpaid volunteers from varied professional backgrounds who donate their time to offer guidance to Township staff and the Board of Supervisors on various land use and zoning plans and policies.
For Embrace Millcreek, the Planning Commission will be responsible for holding public meetings, developing public engagement strategies, advising township staff, and selecting and managing planning experts to help collect and analyze data for the actual ‘Plan’ that will be developed.
However, ultimately everyone who comes out and takes part will be responsible for Embrace Millcreek. It will be up to every resident to make sure that the vision and goals established by the community are actually implemented by the Board of Supervisors and the township’s professional public servants.
How can you have your voice heard?
Over the course of the next year and a half, the Millcreek Planning Commission will hold township wide and neighborhood level public meetings, develop a strong social media presence, and utilize more traditional media (newspaper, the township TV channel, and of course IN Millcreek Magazine) to keep residents informed and engaged.
