Millcreek Township To Hire New Animal Resource Officer Pending Board Approval

For Immediate Release: Nov. 30, 2023

MILLCREEK, PA – A candidate for the Animal Resource Officer (ARO) role accepted an employment offer from Millcreek Township. The ARO will compassionately uphold the safety and well-being of residents and animals in Millcreek's care. They will start duties in the first quarter of 2024 pending board approval.

Township posted the ARO position in Oct. 2023 and received significant interest. The township conducted extensive interviews for the role with several highly qualified candidates. Candidates were evaluated on their experience, decision-making under pressure, education and vision for the ARO role in the township.

The chosen ARO that an employment offer was extended to comes with 20 years of uninterrupted animal handling experience. They have previously been employed as a humane police officer for multiple Humane Societies and are currently an animal control officer for another Pennsylvania municipality.

“We are excited to have an experienced, caring and compassionate animal resource officer working across Millcreek who can develop the future of this position,” said Chief Code Enforcement Officer Shalan Anderson, "they will be another positive resource for all residents in the community to compassionately solve often complex issues involving pets and wildlife."

The ARO position was moved to the Code Enforcement Department from the Police Department in 2023 to accommodate the new title and responsibilities. Included are new standard operating procedures with an emphasis on compassionate care and authorization to perform code enforcement duties. Additionally, the new ARO will create close relationships with organizations related to animal welfare in the area.

More information on the new ARO and the position will be available closer to their start date in 2024 pending board approval.

*This amended release clarifies the position of the ARO. Board approval is still needed for the position, though an employment offer has been extended and accepted.
